A dog at the Grand Taj Bengal in Kolkata has become the latest obsession among travellers.

Ratan Tata's deep and lifelong affection for dogs has long been woven into the Tata legacy, especially within its hospitality spaces. Beyond championing animal welfare and establishing India's first advanced Small Animal Hospital, he opened the doors of Bombay House and the iconic Taj Bengal in Kolkata to stray dogs in need of care. Today, one such four-legged friend, Thumki - the hotel's gentle resident dog - has become an unexpected attraction for travellers from around the world.

In a heartwarming Instagram video that is rapidly gaining popularity, Thumki can be seen trotting confidently through the opulent lobby of Taj Bengal, as if greeting guests in her self-appointed role as the hotel's furry host. Ratan Tata's legacy of compassion lives on with this endearing mascot, who effortlessly spreads the message of adopting pets.

The video captures Thumki, a former stray, joyfully interacting with hotel staff against the backdrop of the property's grand interiors - a charming moment that many travellers now look out for when visiting the hotel.

Adding to the delight, the caption accompanying the clip is written from Thumki's perspective. It playfully reads: "Taj Bengal - an annexure of Thumki estate, where hoomans come from afar and stay in exchange for some paper that can be used to get treats. I have to periodically take rounds to see if all my staff are working as promised. I mean business when it comes to treats."
